CASE STUDY - Age UK Barrow & District Canoeing Project...

Age UK Barrow & District and Kepplewray Trust Canoeing Project

(Funded by UKSPF via Active Cumbria)

My name is Trish and I am an admin volunteer for Age UK Barrow and District, helping people with Blue Badge applications. By chance I saw the poster Lorna was preparing for the canoe outing and immediately asked if I could join.  I was really attracted to the Open Canoes after an unfortunate experience trying to climb back into a kayak in a training session in the swimming pool nearly 50 years ago.  (I’m 78 now). Canoes are more stable and it’s not assumed you’ll be overturning at some point!

It was also a memorable experience as I haven’t done anything adventurous since the pandemic and a hip replacement a year ago.  It was fabulous being out in the fresh air in such beautiful surroundings.  The first outing was on a windless day and it was a joy just to experience the peace (except when it was disturbed by a certain unruly member of the crew!).  On the second day we had glorious sunshine and a breeze and really covered some distance.

Kepplewray Trust made the day special with two experienced and knowledgeable instructors and excellent catering.  We had picnic lunches ashore and tea and cake at every opportunity.

I have been inspired to get out more and can’t wait for the next canoe outing!  I can’t thank the staff at Age UK Barrow & District (Lorna & Steve) and Kepplewray enough for putting the excursion together.
